Questions & answers

About QUICKSURFACE AI

What is QUICKSURFACE AI?

QUICKSURFACE AI lets your AI modelwork inside QUICKSURFACE.

It runs quietly on your computer and links QUICKSURFACE to the AI model you already use.

Is QUICKSURFACE AI its own AI model?

不。. QUICKSURFACE AI is the bridge between QUICKSURFACE and your AI model. The thinking is done by the AI model you choose, such as Claude from Anthropic or GPT models from OpenAI. That’s why your assistant’s privacy settings matter, and why you’re always free to pick the provider you trust.

Which AI assistants does it work with?

Desktop AI assistants that support the open Model Context Protocol (MCP) standard, including Claude Desktop and OpenAI Codex. As more assistants adopt the standard, QUICKSURFACE AI works with them too.

Internet

Do I need an internet connection?

Your AI assistant does. QUICKSURFACE AI doesn’t.

Claude, Codex and similar assistants run their AI models in the provider’s data centre, so they need the internet to think and reply. QUICKSURFACE AI itself works fully offline and talks only to QUICKSURFACE and your assistant, on your computer.

Can I use it fully offline?

Yes, with an AI model that runs on your own computer. Some AI assistants can run local models and work with QUICKSURFACE AI. Nothing then leaves your machine. Local models are usually less capable than Claude or GPT models on complex modelling tasks, so expect simpler results.

What happens if my connection drops mid-task?

The AI pauses. Steps already completed in QUICKSURFACE stay as they are. When you’re back online, ask the AI to check the current model before continuing rather than repeating your last request.

Where data goes

Where does my data go?

What the AI reads goes to your AI provider. Nothing goes to us.

When the AI needs to see your part, QUICKSURFACE AI collects the information from QUICKSURFACE and hands it to your assistant, which sends it to your AI provider (for example Anthropic for Claude, OpenAI for Codex). That includes scan views, measurements, model structure, cross-sections and your messages.

Your scan files and projects are never uploaded.

Does QUICKSURFACE AI send anything to the QUICKSURFACE team?

No. QUICKSURFACE AI makes no internet connections at all. No telemetry, no analytics, no usage tracking.

Want proof? Block QUICKSURFACE AI in Windows Defender Firewall and it keeps working. Or watch it in Windows Resource Monitor and you’ll see no network activity.

Does the AI get my whole scan?

No. The AI works from views of the scan, measurements and cross-sections. It only gets a mesh file if you ask it to export one and then open or upload it.

Views and cross-sections together can still reveal a lot about a part’s shape, so treat anything the AI sees as shared with your AI provider.

Is the connection encrypted?

Yes. Your AI assistant talks to its provider over HTTPS, the same encryption used for online banking. The link between QUICKSURFACE, QUICKSURFACE AI and your assistant never leaves your computer.

How long does the AI provider keep my data?

That depends on your provider, plan and settings, and providers update their rules from time to time. See the current policy for your assistant:

Deleting a conversation in your assistant removes it from your history and starts the provider’s deletion process.

Sharing & training

Is my data shared with anyone?

QUICKSURFACE AI shares nothing. What the AI reads is handled by your AI provider under your account’s terms. Providers don’t sell your conversations or show them to other users. Like any cloud service, they use hosting partners and may review content for safety or when the law requires it. Their privacy policies have the details.

Data can also leave through you: shared chat links, exported conversations, or other tools connected to your assistant. See Security.

Will my scans be used to train AI models?

You decide, through your AI assistant’s settings.

  • Claude Free, Pro and Max: choose whether your chats help improve Anthropic’s models under Settings → Privacy.
  • Claude Team, Enterprise and API: not used for training by default.
  • ChatGPT / Codex personal plans: turn off “Improve the model for everyone” under Settings → Data controls.
  • ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and API: not used for training by default.

Check this setting before working on confidential parts. It takes 30 seconds and it’s the most important privacy choice you’ll make.

Can other people see my conversations?

Not unless you share them. On company plans, administrators may be able to access workspace conversations for compliance. Ask your IT team what applies to you.

Security

What are the chances someone steals my data?

Low. QUICKSURFACE AI adds no new way for data to leave your computer. Here’s where risk sits, from lowest to highest:

LowThrough QUICKSURFACE AI.–It has no internet access, so it can’t send your data anywhere.
LowSomeone intercepting traffic.–Your assistant’s connection is encrypted, and the QUICKSURFACE AI link stays on your computer.
LowA breach at the AI provider.–Possible for any cloud service. Major AI providers publish independent security audits and certifications.
中等Someone getting into your AI account.–A stolen password exposes your chat history. Turn on two-factor sign-in.
中等Shared links and exports.–A shared conversation shows its images and data to anyone with the link.
HigherOther tools in your assistant.–If your assistant also has web access, email, file upload or other add-ons, it could pass scan data to them, and a malicious web page or file could try to trick it into doing so. Only add tools you trust, and read approval prompts.
HigherAn infected computer.–Malware can read your scans with or without AI. Keep your system updated.

Can the AI change or delete my work?

The AI can edit the model open in QUICKSURFACE: create, change and delete sketches and features. It can also save exports and screenshots to folders on your computer, and will overwrite a file with the same name.

It can’t run other programs through QUICKSURFACE AI. Good habits:

  • Save your project before an AI session.
  • Work on a copy of important projects.
  • Send exports to a dedicated folder.

Can someone on my network connect to QUICKSURFACE AI?

No. Your AI assistant starts QUICKSURFACE AI and talks to it directly on the same computer. Other machines can’t reach it.

Staying in control

How do I control what the AI sees?

  • Approve each step. Claude and Codex can ask before every action. Keep this on for sensitive work.
  • Hide what isn’t needed. Scan views only show visible objects.
  • Load only the part you need. Close unrelated projects and scans first.
  • Keep extra details out of the chat. Customer names, part numbers and drawings you paste go to your provider too.

How do I switch QUICKSURFACE AI off?

  • Turn off QUICKSURFACE AI in your AI assistant’s connector settings, or simply close QUICKSURFACE. Without QUICKSURFACE running, there’s nothing for the AI to read.

Companies & NDAs

Can I use it on customer parts under NDA?

Check your NDA and your company’s AI policy first. Many NDAs restrict sharing with third parties, and your AI provider counts as one. If it’s allowed, use a business plan where data isn’t used for training, and keep step approvals on.

This page is general guidance, not legal advice.

What about export-controlled, defence or medical data?

Only use a cloud AI if your compliance team has approved that provider and plan for that kind of data (for example ITAR, EAR or patient data). Otherwise, use a local AI model or work without AI for those projects.

What should I tell my IT or security team?

  1. QUICKSURFACE AI is a local MCP server. It has no network access and no telemetry.
  2. The AI assistant sends tool results (scan views, measurements, cross-sections, model structure) to the chosen AI provider over HTTPS.
  3. Data handling, retention and training follow the AI provider’s terms for your plan.
  4. The AI can edit the open QUICKSURFACE model and write export files. It can’t run arbitrary code through QUICKSURFACE AI.
